From Thursday, January 25 – Monday, January 29, my best girlfriend, Shannon, and I had a “girls’ weekend” (as it was referred to by a friend) in gorgeous South Beach, Florida. That’s right we escaped the 17 degree temperatures here in Baltimore and fled to balmy Florida, where everyday was 70 degrees or higher! Woot Woot!! So here’s the rundown:

Thursday: Made our way to the airport in a snowshower. Luckily, no delay in the flight. The plane ride – one of the worst. One row in front of us, 2 babies who took turns crying the whole flight! Lovely cab ride to our hotel, The Beachcomber recommended by Ed&Tony. Very nice! Quick walk around the nearby streets, and then in bed by 1… long day!
Friday: Slept in, got a decent brunch at the Pelican. Great Cranberry Mimosas. Then did some shopping and walking. $5 Margaritas on Espanola Way and then on to Lincoln Road Mall. Afternoon siesta, then made our way to the Wolfsonian museum, where admission was free on Friday nights. Worth checking out for free and for about an hour. Then went to Tap Tap for an awesome Haitian dinner. Then checked out gay bar, Twist. Great video bar, and very friendly bartenders.
Saturday: Beach day!! Then lunch at Pizza Rustica – AWESOME! Brief siesta, then Dinner at Big Pink. Bad service, excellent Stoli Root Beer Float. Drinks at Mac’s Deuce Bar, local dive bar where we saw… Keith Richards.
Sunday: Early rise for our sightseeing tour of Miami. Bus tour of the bigger sites of Miami Beach, Coral Gables, and Downtown Miami. Then a boat tour of Biscayne Bay, Port of Miami, and all the celebrity mansions. J.Lo’s was the most impressive I think. Then shopping at Bayside, and lunch at La Sandwicherie. Yum-o! Siesta again, and excellent dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab House. Very good, but as a true Marland boy, I’m still partial to blue crabs, but they did have terrific Key Lime Pie. Then another trip to Twist, after we found out the Buck15 was closed on Sunday (a lounge I really wanted to check out). Worst drag show ever at Twist, but in a good way. It was like a trainwreck, and the hosting drag queen was about to start a fight with the bartender/sound guy. Best drag performance ever when Diamond Dunhill mixed Sweet Pussy Pauline with Donna Summer. Truly inspired!
Monday: Last day. Checked out at 12. Left our bags at the hotel and had one last meal at La Sandwicherie, great sandwiches & service. Some more shopping, and then off to the airport. Bye Bye Miami.

All in all, an excellent trip. Some final thoughts on Miami: Bring money. Lots of it. Some very expensive places, and even the affordable places are about $5 more than home. Never expect great service. Most restaurants include tip with the bill, so the servers aren’t working hard for their tips. People with babies, no offense, should not bring them in public until their crying can be controlled. This includes planes and tourist-y sight seeing trips. Your screaming brat ruins everyone else’s good time! Don’t rent a car. South Beach has tons of places within walking distance, and if your feet are tired, cabs are easy to get, and not terribly expensive, and the traffic is bananas! Miami Beach is beautiful. Check it out at your earliest convenience. And thanks to Shannon for a great long weekend!
