November 2006

Well kids, I just have to say, THANK YOU!!!!

Just 4 days shy of my 6-month anniversary, and 3 days after my post-slacker relaunch, I have hit (and passed) 10,000 hits!

Keep coming back, tell your friends, and leave me any coments on what I’m doing right (or wrong!).

To herald the return of the dimwit of the day, I give you: Cypher.

Douglas Ramsey was a mainstay of the New Mutants, the second student team associated with the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, basically, the junior X-Men of the 80’s. Now you know I’d rather crap on my own face then to talk bad about my precious X-Men, however, Doug Ramsey was a total waste. His invaluable mutant power couldn’t harm a fly — he was able to decipher (get it… Cypher) any language, written, spoken, or technological. Oooh! Wolverine can cut up anything with knives that come out of his arm. Storm can control the weather. Kitty Pryde (Doug’s sort of girlfriend) can walk through walls. Cypher can, um… talk and read and stuff. OOh. Scary. Magneto’s is pissing in his purple panties with fear. NOT! Knowing they had a turd on their hands, the powers that be at Marvel decided to kill him in New Mutants #60. But this Dimwit would have his day again!
In the 90’s, they decided to revive him. There was a terrible villain going around by the name of the Phalanx. The Phalanx was some strange alien/mutant/techno-organic race that could absorb electronics and people, and sort of make them into sort of mechanical pod people, all sharing one sentient mind. Back in the New Mutants, Cypher’s best friend was an alien techno-organic shape-shifter called Warlock. Warlock died later in the series, and his ashes were scattered onto Doug’s grave (how you can incinerate the body of a dead techno-organic alien… which is basically “magic” metal… and have it turn into ashes is beyond me). The Phalanx came along and collected Warlock’s ashes to assimilate him and make the Phalanx stronger. Oopsy, they gathered up Doug’s remains too. Somehow, Doug & Warlock merged inside the Phalanx, and were able to break apart and become there own separate entity from the Phalanx collective. And now my head hurts from trying to explain all that.

Then, Douglock (yeah… it keep getting lamer), after helping the X-Men to defeat the Phalanx, got to join Excalibur for a few years. After they realized the character was still lame, and around the time Excalibur got canned, Douglock got sent off into chracter limbo. Where he will hopefully stay. For a long long time!

OK. So along with getting totally behind on the blog, I haven’t stopped into the local comic shop, Comics Kingdom (plug!!), since before my birthday. Which means I am almost a month beind on my comic buyin’ and a readin’. SHAME ON ME! My to buy list is over 30 books long, especially with all this Civil War business going on at Marvel and WildStorm relaunching The Authority. So in my current predicament (the cover value of all this stuff is over $100), I’m turning to where I used to buy comics in my slacker days before I moved to Baltimore. Comic Books Etc has become Impulse Creations, but still offers 20-30% off list price for new releases.

I prefer going into my LCS (dork translation = Local Comics Shop) and actually looking at stuff and seeing what’s new and eye-catching. But, if I haven’t been in 3-4 weeks, then the LCS is likely to sell out of a bunch of the stuff I’m looking for, and comics seem cheaper when you buy your stack every week or so. So I found this great website where you can generally find most recent books at a discount, plus free shipping since I’m spending over $50, but their discount still makes it come in under $100!!

So I’ll spare you the back tracking of what I need to catch up on, and here is what is getting released today:

Black Panther #22 – Black Panther & Storm finish off their World Tour/Honeymoon by stopping into the lovely Civil War-torn US of A. Apparently they’re chatting it up with Iron Man, who will probably be an asshole, and cement Roro & ChaCha’s plans to join in the War, probably on the anti-registration side. Ooh!

Captain America #24 – Cap and his allies do some stuff. Civil War related… the preview synopsis was pretty bland, but I’m still eager to read it after last issue’s interesting Winter Soldier & Nick Fury story!

Nextwave #10 – Did none of you fuckers read my blog!? Month after month I giddily applauded this series. So much fun to read, and yet, Marvel is pulling the plug in 2 months. Allegedly Warren Ellis only planned to stay on for a year, however it seems sales figures are leading to the series ending at 12, and allegedly coming back with a few infrequent mini-series. I don’t understand how crap like New Excalibur (which I read anyway) can go on, but a genuinely riveting book like this has to stop. Oh well…

Onslaught Reborn #1 – All of my better judgement is telling me to skip this series. A ten year anniversary “event” celebrating the mid 90’s comics disaster in which several of Marvel’s biggest heroes (Fantastic 4, Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and the Hulk (I think)) were sent into an alternate reality which was ” re-imagined by Jim Lee & Rob Liefeld, who had just jumped Marvel’s ship 4-5 years prior to start up some crappy and inconsitent books for Image. So basically this is a mini-series re-visiting the time that, for a year, Jim & Roid (er, Rob) shit all over the incredible universe that Stan Lee and his buddies created 40 years ago. This book gets ONE chance to not suck before I toss it out.

X-Men #193 – The conclusion of the first arc for the revamped title. Can’t wait to see what happens. And for some more character development. The cover looks too busy and too yellow though.

Zombie #3 – I forgot to get issue #2… so I have no idea what’s happening. Whoops!

I’m also ordering:
Dr. Strange: The Oath #2, Eternals #5, New X-Men #32, Wisdom #1, Midnighter #1, Authority #1, Gen13 #1-2, Wonder Woman #3, Amazing Spider-Man #536, Civil War FrontLine #8, New Excalibur #13, Punisher War Journal #1, Runaways #22, Wolverine #48, Astonishing X-Men #18, Cable & Deadpool #34, Civil War #5, Iron Man #13, Ms. Marvel #9, New Avengers #25, X-Men First Class #3, & Catwoman #61.

I hope to not get behind like this again!!!

Well, today at work was tremendous. Another busy day with us putting on a program and being here from 7:30-5. Not out of the ordinary, especially since we’ve been having so many lately. Since August, really, at least 1-4 days of the week we’ve been having some sort of program. Which has made it pretty hard to take much vacation. And since I’ve been here almost 6 years, I get 4-5 weeks a year.

So today my boss told me to figure out how much time I have left to use up before the rest of the year. I did the math, expecting to find I need to use up a week or so, or lose it, by the end of the year. WRONG!

2 weeks and 2 days of vacation to use up by December 29th. And I have to use it or lose it. And that’s also accounting for the 5 days I’m banking for next year, which is the maximum.

So my last day of work for 2006 is December 12th. How awesome is that!? I haven’t had this much time off from work since I was 15 and not even working yet. Whole of my body is jumping!!

But then again, I started to wonder… what am I going to do with all that free time?

I can’t wait to find out!!!

Alright, kids, in honor of the tunes part of the blog, it is my duty to share with you the great music that is out there, hidden behind the heaps of crappy music on the radio. So on Tuesdays, I’ll be sharing two mp3’s with you. Enjoy them or ignore them, but I’m quite fond of them.

Today I give you:

Mary J. Blige featuring U2 – One

Mary kills it on this one. Mary is one of the greatest musicians out there, but she can sometimes just kills a cong with the wrong inflections or oversinging. Look at most of her live performances of “No More Drama” back in the day. Oops! Anyway, here she takes one of the greatest rock songs ever, and just knocks it out of the park. You go girl!

Justin Timberlake – SexyBack (Rauhofer Reconstruction Edit)

So apparently radio is killing this song. I don’t listen to the radio much, so I’m still enthralled with it, and this here is one of the better mixes of it. The other one being the Armand Van Helden Mix… and I’m almost ashamed to say that this one does it for me more than the others.

So that’s it for today. Put em on your iPod and dance around while you do the dishes. At least… that’s what I do!!

The Rules (in case you want to do it too!)
Step 1: Put your MP3/iTunes on random.
Step 2: Post lyrics from the first 20 songs that play.
Step 3: Post it on your blog & let everyone guess what song & artist the lyrics are from.
Step 4: When a song is guessed correctly, strike out the lyrics & post the title in bold.
Step 5: Looking the lyrics up on Google (or any other search engine) is cheating!!
So, if you know the song – leave your guess in a comment. If you’re right, I’ll post your name (or link). Enjoy!

It’s relaunch time, Baby!!!

Between work and vacation and all that real life shit… I’ve been really ignoring the blog for the past few weeks. So in shame and in favor of renewed inspiration, I’m having a sort of relaunch.

I’m going to try to have a daily post of the features you love or hate. Monday’s will be a new Music Meme every week (the lyrics quiz). Tuesday will be 2 new or old MP3’s I’ll share with you. Wednesday will be the pull list for what’s new in comic book world. Thursday will see the return of the dimwit of the day, and I dunno what I’ll do with Friday yet.

Also, in blog world, I’m rapidly approaching 10,000 hits… whoo-hoo. And in the real world, my favorite holiday is rapidly approahing – Christmas. So expect all kinds of Christmas fun and posts.

So I’m sorry about the delays, but keep coming back, and I promise ot be more on track for a while. Cheers!
