October 2006

Black Panther #21 – The World Tour continues… with Black Panther & Storm heading to Atlantis to chat it up with Namor. Going by their last 2 visits to other kingdoms, a mini-battle is bound to start up. It will also be interesting to see if Namor gets a taste for some chocolate, and hits on Storm, since he just loves married women (a la Sue Storm the Invisible Woman).

Captain America #23 – Don’t you just hate it when your woman does you wrong!? Isn’t it worse when she sells you out to your opposition in the middle of a Civil War between superheroes and the guv’mint!? Well that was last issue. So, did the poonany that Cap got last issue reinvigorate him to kick ass this issue?

Heroes For Hire #3 – So last issue turned out to be pretty good… not as predictable a book as I thought it would be. I can be wrong sometimes!

New Avengers #24 – Where does the mysterious Sentry stand in the Civil War broo-ha-ha? He’s been pretty absent so far, so hopefully this issue will answer the questions about where he stands and why.

New Excalibur #12 – So last issue was not so bad. Who knew that Dazzler would ever be performing in King Arthur’s court. I’m sure the outcome of this issue will be, Excalibur (the team) saves the day, and then Black Knight will probably join the team. Bringing the total of non-mutants on this X-men in Europe team up to 2. How’s that for anti-discrimination!?

Nextwave #9 – This book is fucking brilliant & everyone should give it a try. That’s all!

X-Men #192 – Only 2 issues left of the first X-Men story arc under new writer Mike Carey. It’s been fun so far, if only a little hard to follow. I really liked the explanation about where The Children came from, and I’m a fickle fan when it comes to new villains. If they aren’t going to be developed & used adequately, I say why bother making them up, when there’s already a ton of villains around with a low mortality rate.

Zombie #2 – The first issue was a little underwhelming, but I’m willing to give the second issue a try, to see if this book comes up with anything different then your average zombie movie cliches & plots. I’ll let you know later! This book is definetly no Walking Dead though!

No pictures on the pull list for the next week or two. Having trouble linking them on my temporary computer at work… so I’ll figure out a new method soon!

Cable & Deadpool #33 – The Civil War tie-in arc is over now, so now we’re onto a story about Cable trying to off Deadpool. And apparently we’re bringing in Domino and the Wild Pack or Six Pack or whatever they’re called. A bit of 90’s nostalgia, and if it doesn’t pull me in, I’m dropping the title!!

Civil War: X-Men #4 – So we’re at the climax, and the 198 appear to be doomed. I’m sure something un-imaginitive and trite will save them at the last minute, however since the 198 is mostly composed of lame-ass D-level mutants, I say, kill ’em all, and start trying to re-power some of the cooler de-powered mutants like Jubilee, Rictor, and Blob!

Ms. Marvel #8 – Oh how I love Ms. Marvel. I just got 20 issues of her series from the late 70’s on eBay a few weeks back, and it’s one of the few titles from before 1985 that I can read an entire issue in one sitting without getting bored. Much the same as with her current series too. This issue should tie up some of the Civil War related loose ends, and resolve the dilemma of Carol tracking down her old friend Arachne (Spider-Woman II). Plus, how close are Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man getting? ooh la la

Runaways #21 – The end of the ‘Dead Means Dead’ arc. Is Chase really going to revive Gert? This issue also sets up the final arc for the original creative team of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, before they leave at issue #25 for Joss Whedon and Matthew Ryan to take over. Can’t wait to see how the passing of the baton goes.

Wolverine #47 – The conclusion of the Civil War arc for Wolverine. Now I just read a rather negative review in Wizard about this storyline, and I would like to tell you all to ignore them this time. The art has been great, and the story, while occasionally repetitive, has been very exciting and surprising. So, Wizard, I’ll forgive you for being wrong this time. And to those of you who didn’t pick it up, wait for the trade so you can get it all at once!!

X-Factor # 12 – Um… my local comic book shop ran out of #11, and I haven’t had a chance to get to any other stores to find it… so I’ll buy this one anyway… and won’t read it till I get #11. Gee Whiz!

X-Men: First Class #2 – I wasn’t all that jazzed with the first issue. Hopefully this one will have a little more something to it. It’s only a mini-series, so I’ll pick up all 6 issues regardless, but hopefully it will be better then the awful X4 (X-Men and Fantastic Four) miniseries from 2 years ago.

And for those of you interested in birthday shopping for me… I have been avoiding buying the following because of the impending holidays:

  • Essential X-Men Vol. 1-5
  • Essential Spider-Woman
  • Spider-Woman: Origins Hardcover
  • X-Men – Kitty Pryde: Shadow & Flame Trade Paperpack
  • Infinite Crisis Hardcover
  • Pride of Baghdad Graphic Novel
  • Avengers Dissassembled Trade Paperback

So maybe I can report on those in November!?

no words…

Well, we did it again! Cyndi Lauper appeared at the Ram’s Head Live in Downtown Baltimore last night, and the BF and I were there with bells on! It was a general admission club show, which always have their pro’s and con’s, but all in all it was a great night. We got there aorund 6:30, to get into line for the doors opening at 7pm. Without assigned seating, we wanted to be as close as we could get! The doors opened at about 7:15, and we rushed in to find ourselves one “row” back from the stage extension (the stage jutted out onto a 5 foot platform in the center, so we were quite close!). We started to chat a bit with the people around us, and were pretty keyed up for the concert.

The opening act, The Rule, came out at about 8 pm, and played for about 45 minutes. They were not bad, but I wasn’t rushing back to the Merch booth to pick up the CD or anything. Rocky Reggae, sung by a white guy, so it was kind of like UB40 for the new millenium. But still, they were upbeat and sufficient at keeping us from getting too bored waiting. (The worst opening act would have to have been Citizen Cope who opened for Nelly Furtado and played 1 chord & sang warbled unintelligible garble for about 30 minutes.)

Finally about 9:10, Cyndi came to the stage. We’ve seen her once before and were already aware that she is one of this generation’s most dynamic stage performers, and last night was no exception. She started out doing a cover of “Mack the Knife”, which was sung on an old microphone to give “old timey” effects, plus there was a flickering spot on her, that really gave the effect on being in an old time movie. She then pulled off her black cloak to reveal a cute little outfit underneath and launched into her 2-3 punch of “That’s What I Think” and “What’s Going On”, which according to her tour blog, the 3 songs together are like her statement on politics and world affairs right now. Go Cyndi!

The rest of the night included:

Mack The Knife – That’s What I think – What’s Going On – Still With Me – All Through the Night – Goonies R Good Enough (Acapella) –  True Colors – She Bop – Sisters of Avalon – Who Let In the Rain – Other Side of Here – Shine – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Above The Clouds – Change of Heart — Encore: I Drove All Night – Iko Iko/No Woman No Cry (with the Rule) – Time After Time – Money Changes Everything

All in all, a fantastic set list, a few songs she hasn’t performed on the tour yet, plus 2 new songs that sound fantastic, and I can’t wait to hear on her next album, and plenty of crowd banter thoughout. I was also happy to see the setlist changed up from her tour last year, and her ending the night with a song other that ‘Girls’… since she has a great back catalogue that gets eclipsed by that little ditty. Also, there was a little boy there who could not have been more then 10 years old, and was just adorable. He had on a t-shirt that said, “I may be the yougest Cyndi Lauper fan, but I’m also the Biggiest”. So sweet. Cyndi spotted him over the course of the evening, and signed his t-shirt during the show, and sang part of the intro to “I Drove All Night” directly to him. I’m sure she made the kid’s year, and I have even more appreciation for her because of it!

The negatives however, would be not being able to sit at all. BF and I were talking about how the last time we saw her was in a theater and we would have rather stood for her opening act that time, and sat for the one last night. Oh well! Also, in front of us and to the left was this whole family. Husband, wife, and 2 children. And I mean children as in about 5 and 7 respectively. The kids didn’t give 2 shits about Cyndi Lauper (totally unlike the little boy nearby, who was clearly beyond excited), the wife looked miserable too, & it appeared like the guy brought the kids, only in hopes of Cyndi being more prone to signing autograpohs for the kids during the show, then for a grown-ass man. AND the husband, appeared rather gay to those of us with a well-tuned gaydar. And not hip gay, but white trash latent Essex gay, who was trying to mask his gayness with 2 bratty little kids and a wife who was basically the real life equivalent of the Michelle Williams character in “Brokeback Mountain”. It was unfortunate. And funny. I guess I’m just mean. I’m just glad the kids didn’t get trampled or anything. Other than that, a perfect night.

So if you get the chance, go see her in your town. It’s totally worth it!

Also, keep an eye out for her in summer 2007, when she launches the True Colors tour, with Erasure, and several other gay or gay-friendly artists, with proceeds going to the HRC. Kind of like a gay(er) Lilith Fair!

hey kids,

I have been a terrible slacker as far as my blogmasterly ways lately. Shame on me!! Between computer problems at home and work, plus one of the most intense tech weeks I have ever been involved in, the blog has been almost totally off my mental radar. But I’m back, and hopefully will be more attentive for the time being.

At least until my birthday when I hope to be drunk as much as I can for the beginning of November.

Anyway, if you didn’t know already I was the official “Show Bitch” for Angels in America which just opened at Spotlighters Theatre in Baltimore. Show Bitch was the title we agreed upon by the end of the week. I was initially a sound designer, in charge of real-life sound effects; but over a week of many uncontrollable circumstances, I also got to help with some costumes, painting, light design, props and PA tasks such as “Robbie, please go pick up beer, it’s gonna be another late night” or “Can you get me something to eat?” and my favorite “The stage manager [my BFF] needs to calm down and you’re the only one who can help her with that. You have until 7:50 to get that done.” So basically, whenever anyone needed help, I was there to help. Either with my help, or in spite of it, the show turned out tremendously, and you should all go check it out. Also, my new buddy ModFab has promised me 3 separate blow jobs for all my help. Oh my!

Other than that, I’m re-introducing myself to normal life, and getting ready for my birthday. (November 4th, if you’re keeping track!)

So, sorry about the delays… but I’m back for the time being…. whether you like it or not!
