A new recurring feature I’m gonna start up: Once a week I’m gonna post on 5 songs getting the heaviest rotation on my iPod/computer. Here’s the first go round:

1. Pink – Dear Mr. President (I’m Not Dead) — I’m totally buying this cd this weekend. Her last cd was awesome, but I wasn’t quick to buy the new one yet. ‘Stupid Girls’ is good… but kind of a novelty song… so I wasn’t totally sold. This song however, just amazing. It’s a very stripped back guitar and vocals song. Not what I would expect from Pink really, I mean it sounds like an acoustic version of a song you’d get as a b-side to the main single. The lyrics are decent, critical of the president, without being too contrived, and the more I hear her voice the more I’m impressed with it. I linked to a live performance on youtube yesterday… so you know the bitch can sing for real too.
2. Gnarls Barkley – Crazy (MC DJ Remix) (St. Elsewhere/Crazy Remixes) — OK, so at first I thought I was one of a select few who knew about this song in the states. I’m always into the UK music scene, and knew this song was incredible, but didn’t know if it could work in the US. Then the other day I look on Billboard and it’s at number 2. Ninja what!? So I’m thrilled that some decent music has made it to US radio, and this little remix is hot too. It’s one of those neat-o little remixes that are kind of post-techno but not quite house that sound great blasting in your car while driving quickly. Kind of like a Hybrid remix, with more organic music elements.
3. Nelly Furtado – Say It Right (Loose) — Some people out there have been pissing and moaning about Nelly allegedly selling out, and going hip-hop, to which I say, shut the fuck up. Her first album meddled in a bunch of genres, and her side projects have been primarily hip-hop related (Missy Elliott, The Roots, Jelleestone); so just because he last album was mostly folk, don’t pigeonhole the girl! That said, this is one of my favorite tracks from the album. Tight Timbaland beat, but the vocals and lyrics are more classic Nelly style. A perfect marriage of the two styles. I’ve heard rumors this could be the next US single. I would have thought it would be ‘Maneater’, but hey, if they work it right, this album could have a string of hit singles!
4. Garbage – Shut Your Mouth (Jolly Music Scary Mix) (Shut Your Mouth Single) — I don’t know why Garbage doesn’t do remixes for every song they release. I just got a hold of this single from their second to last album (Beautiful Garbage) and this remix is a hot little electro stomper. Shirley’s vocals are a perfect match for electronic beats. Yummy!
5. Jason Mraz – O. Lover (Mr. A-Z) — I got his album a while back, and didn’t pay much attention to it. Then this song popped up on my iPod one day, and I’m hooked. It brings to mind elements of Dave Matthews band being taken over by a Latin band. A little rock jam about love and desire… and his lyrics are hot.

In a perfect world, I’d add download links, but I don’t want to get in trouble with those RIAA bastards, so I listed the album, so you can find them on your own (I hope). That’s where I am in music this week, which will be all different next week
